Nelson / Tasman
It’s 40 years since Nelson’s Rod Dixon won the New York City Marathon.
To mark that milestone four Nelsonians will run the 2023 New York City Marathon. Nelson Mayor Nick Smith, Whakatū Marae Poutohuwhakahaere Kim Ngawhika, Saint Paul’s School Board Chair Lester Binns and Top South Media Managing Director Andrew Board are preparing to compete in the marathon on 5 November to raise funds for this awesome cause.
Our four runners will pay their own way to the marathon but seek donations to fundraise for Rod Dixon’s KiDSMARATHON, an in-school running educational programme that Dixon established.
More than 1.8 million children worldwide have already used the programme; this fundraising will allow Nelson and Tasman schools to be supported in running the program in 2024.
The primary schools with apply to Sport Tasman for costs involved in participating in the marathon.
Sport Tasman is proud to support this initiative and will administer the funds at no cost ensuring all the money raised will go to local schools.
Sport Tasman is all about improving community well-being through physical activity across the Top of the South Island.
The Trusts vision is equitable participation opportunities and experiences to be physically active.
All the funds raised will go to Nelson-Tasman schools for participation in Rod Dixon’s KiDSMARATHON programme.
