On 9 December 2019, following the devastating eruption of Whakaari, Mark Law flew towards the island, landing in extremely hazardous conditions to help locate and evacuate critically injured people.

The WorkSafe prosecutions that followed a year after the Whakaari rescue related to Kāhu NZ's tourism operations at Whakaari prior to the eruption. At the time, more than 140,000 people signed a petition asking the government to drop the charges. That was ignored.

Mark and the Kāhu team acted when people desperately needed help. Mark’s extraordinary courage that day was subsequently recognised with the New Zealand Bravery Star, New Zealand’s second-highest civilian bravery award.

Since then, Mark has developed two significant innovations.

1. An extremely efficient firefighting tank (the TUU) for Blackhawk aircraft

2. A heavy-duty aluminium bridge structure which can be flown into remote river crossings in disaster situations to enable access to cut-off regions.

I set up this page in support of Mark and Mark’s long-time friend Ron Crosby. After learning more about Mark’s situation through the recently released book Lucky You’re Tough, written by Ron and Mark, I volunteered to help establish this page.

Use of funds

Funds raised will help Kāhu continue to develop these two innovations with design and manufacturing costs, secure appropriate intellectual property protection, build and test working prototypes.
