Protect Mataharehare
We are working to save Mataharehare - the ancient Pā site, the jewel-like park, and the great 180+ year-old Pohutukawa tree.

Mataharehare, Dove Myer Robinson Park is a Taonga of Tamaki Makaurau.
The Ministry of Arts and Culture are proposing a small sunny north facing lawn be used for the siting of the Erebus Memorial.
This land is owned by all New Zealanders and used by children daily who come to climb Te Ha, (The Breath) the 180 year old pohutukawa, whose roots are going to be compromised if this structure goes ahead.
The site does not meet the wishes of many of the Erebus families.
They requested a south facing, quiet site - this site faces north, and is extremely noisy from the Port, railway shunting and helicopter facilities nearby.
We have been occupying the site for over 67 days, to protect this historic, much loved space for all future generations to enjoy. It was originally bought to be the ‘lungs of Auckland’ when the population reached 25,000.
Asking for your support
The campaign is a grassroots effort that has bought together people from across New Zealand.
The petition, www.Change.org/Mataharehare, led by an Erebus family member, is approaching 9000 signatures.
