Help save Mercury Bay Boating Club from falling into the tide.
Whitianga, Waikato
Huge swells whipped up by Cyclone Hale accelerated erosion in front of Mercury Bay Boating Club with many meters of land in front of the Club lost in only two high-tides, undermining the seaward deck and threatening to take the whole Clubhouse.
The Club is seeking funding to pick up the building and move it away from the relentless tide while site works can be completed to place it in a safer location.
Any contribution through Give a Little gratefully accepted and will be used only on relocation costs.
Established in 1948 Mercury Bay Boating Club has a rich history, both locally and internationally, having challenged for the Americas Cup in 1988 with Sir Michael Fay's KZ1.
The Club has a growing Centreboard Fleet, a popular Learn to Sail programme (for all ages) including a special needs program, a great fleet of Multi Hulls and a packed calendar for Keeler racing.
The Club's location on the Buffalo Beach waterfront in Whitianga made coastal erosion a real threat and plan's were underway to move the building back from the beach. We have been beaten to the punch.
All funds raised will contribute to lifting and relocating Mercury Bay Boating Club's building away from the grip of the sea.
Still We Rise 29 January 2023
Even though we cannot use our club house any more, our keel boat racing continued, as did our junior sailing programs, out of our make-shift sailing center (a 40-foot container). We press onwards with our reinstatement planning. Thank you everyone, for your support so far.
