The seafood industry is growing Mos or giving things up to raise money for Movember and look out for our mates, on the water and on shore.
Nationwide
Our industry runs on long shifts, time away from home and people who keep going no matter what. That toughness is something to be proud of. But it can also mean people carry things on their own for too long.
7.8 men died by suicide each week in New Zealand, averaged across the year.
74% of all suicides in New Zealand are men.
Movember is working to change that, and so is FirstMate, the seafood industry’s own wellbeing service. FirstMate Navigators are out on the boats, in the sheds and on the wharves. They notice when someone’s not doing well and help them find the right support.
Donations on this page go 50% to Movember for men’s mental health and suicide prevention. And 50% to FirstMate to back the people looking out for our crews right here in Aotearoa.
Any amount helps, and so does a yarn. If our Mo / challenge gets you checking in on a mate, that’s a win too.
Grow it. Give it up. Look out for your mates.
Working at sea can be very challenging mentally, physically, legally and financially. It’s vital that people in the industry and their whānau have the support they need to adjust and thrive. That is what FirstMate is hear to provide.
The funds will e split equally between Movember, funding men’s health projects and research in mental health and suicide prevention and FirstMate, helping its Navigators support people across the seafood industry.
