Hit & Run - Mr T needs a scooter.
Whangarei, Northland
Te Wairongoa Paniona (Wally), affectionately known by the community as Mr T, is in need of our help whanau.
In the early hours of Sunday 14th October, Mr T was the victim of a hit and run. The driver heavily struck him just shy of his home, leaving Mr T on the road bloodied and terribly injured with his mobility scooter scattered around him in pieces.
Mr T has no recollection of the incident. He was taken to ICU but is now on a ward having made it through surgery. He also has a multiple breaks in his right leg, ten broken ribs, a broken pelvis, concussion and all round bruising from the impact.
More than anything, our Mr T is most concerned about what happens once he is well enough to leave hospital. Without his scooter, he fears losing his independence and becoming isolated. Or that he will become a burden to his friends, whanau and community by needing to rely on us for help around town.
We are asking the community to tautoko (support) Mr T by making a donation towards the purchase of a new mobility scooter. I have spoken with the team at Scooter Works in Hikurangi, where Mr T has his scooter servicing done, and they have quoted $7500 for a new one.
Any funds above the purchase price will go towards general living costs and maintenance of the new scooter.
Mr T has received so much aroha (love) and well wishes since the incident and is very grateful to all for keeping him in their thoughts.
