My wheelchair was destroyed in car accident

This page is to raise money to replace my wheelchair which was deystroyed when I was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing near my home.

Dunedin, Otago

Hi, my name is Jamie!

I am a volunteer Girl Guide leader and physics student with a passion for teaching (I hope to be a professor one day). I also use a wheelchair: I have a genetic disorder and have had complications over the last year that have made walking more than a few metres unaided impossible. You might see me around Otago University running free workshops & teaching physics, at local libraries, or at a peaceful protest in the Octagon.

On tuesday (14/04/26) I was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing near my home in Dunedin. My wheelchair was damaged beyond repair and my condition has gotten worse. https://www.odt.co.nz/news/dunedin/wheelchair-user-hit-dunedin-pedestrian-crossing

Having a wheelchair has enabled me to continue volunteering with Girl Guiding NZ, participate in my community, access education, and pursue my passions. But unfortunately, for a complicated mix of reasons, I am not eligible for a funded wheelchair. So the wheelchair I was using when I was hit by the car was one I had funded myself and is not something I have the money to replace. Which is, hopefully, where you come in. A replacement wheelchair is going to cost me around $9k (https://1drv.ms/b/c/7217ea531fae3605/IQDvRRxs7h1fRqK-JFOgVtUYAV4rBLo_PEQN1_ZCOfeC8Wo?e=oRKFnG this is the pricing estimate I got at the last disability expo), I appreciate any money you can spare to help me get a wheelchair and get back to my life.

Your support means the world to me, thank you.

Use of funds

Like anything in the disability sphere, wheelchairs are expensive. I wish I was asking for a lot with my $9k estimate, but that is the cheapest chair that meets my needs that I can get an estimate on. Every cent I raise will go towards a wheelchair.

We met the goal!!  29 April 2026

Thank you all so much for your donations and kind words. It means to world to me to see what a wonderful and supportive community we are part of! Especially my Guiding family.

I think I've figured out how to stop donations now that we've reach the goal (hopefully that works). There are so many other great causes that would be so grateful for your donations, so go and pay them some attention please and stop donating to my page if my attempt at stopping it doesn't work. Thank you, again, you're all spectacular people!

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
