“Native Garden Maze” with a educational spin.

$165 donated
Given by 5 generous donors in one year

Not just any garden or maze.. but a "Native Garden Maze", designed with a unique culture educational fun artistic twist for all.

Gisborne

I'm trying to create a unique fun, educational attraction. A Hedge garden maze grown with native shrubs and fauna design with a cultural theme. A place others can offer there arts, crafts, traditions, knowledge and more.

The principle behind the concept was a Leonardo DiCaprio documentary "The 11th Hour" which commented;"Kids can name thousands of brands and logos but only name few then 10 plants or birds native to their own place". So with over a hundred different varieties we aim to change change.

The Journey started with a last minute application to N.Z. Maori Tourism Dragons Den NZ in August 2018. Of the award’s five categories, Dion won the Dragon’s Den “bring your idea to life” start-up category. It was an easy finalist choice for the 'Dragon's', but also had overwhelming buy-in from the audience. Dion received $10,000 of prize money to start up this business venture. The next step was to register 'NZ Native Garden Maze', and start looking for the perfect location, as well as starting a website and social media to garner interest and support from businesses through to individuals!

Currently waiting on a meeting with the Gisborne District Council or possible partnership with an Iwi regarding land, "but most likely will have to lease something".Trying to get a location by the airport which will provide a mesmerizing arrival for travelers flying into Gisborne NZ. Imagine looking out the window of the plane and seeing the native garden maze below with the stylized outline of a Taniwha’s face at the center, not just a traditional garden or maze but one with cultural educational element mixed with exercise and fun.

Use of funds

The majority of funding will go towards the goal of showcasing every native plant from NZ, within consideration of all scenario to make that happen from soil conditioning, weather protection, access infrastructure, fencing/security plus other amenities.
