Nau Puriri - Para cyclist
Who am I:
I am a NZ para-cyclist and a volunteer fire fighter at the Ngunguru Fire Station.
Background:
At 5 years old I suffered a stroke and was initially wheelchair bound until therapy enabled me to walk but with limited function to my right leg. My right arm also has a mind of its own and takes some concentration to control at times. At 8 years old I was diagnosed with epilepsy and the severity of the seizures over time led to a brain operation at 12 years old to control this.
Over the years I have tried to be as active as possible and try various sports.
At the beginning of 2015 I was introduced to Road Cycling and was selected into the NZ Para-cycling Development Squad where I am able to compete against people with similar disabilities as myself. This has also recently introduced me to Track Cycling on the Velodrome.
My Goal is to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, to do this i need to reach certain other goals along my way. As i live remote from from where i am best to train and to get to events for qualifying involves travel i am looking for help to get to these training camps and compassion along with assistance to purchase a Track bike of my own to give me a better chance at competition.
