Support pregnant young Mum-to-be (Ama 2 B) living in a resettlement camp near Kathmandu
Canterbury
Recently I was in Nepal volunteering. Before I left I visited a resettlement camp in Bhaktapur near Kathmandu where 1700+ displaced people from the Sindhupalchok district were living in tents. The camp was well organised and run by very dedicated people, however they rely on donations to purchase food other than rice. Amongst the people are 11 pregnant women all due to give birth before the end of the year (winter). They need more nutritious food in order to grow healthy babies and give them the best start possible in life. They do not get any extra provisions or support just because they are pregnant. With winter coming all these women need warm clothes and blankets for their babies also once they are born.
The pregnant women I have information for so far are as follows:
1. Maya Thapa, 27 years old, From Tatopani VDC ward 7 Sindhupalchok district, Living in Tent No 13. Maya is infected with Hep B and is in desperate need of vaccines for her unborn child at delivery.
2. Radhika B.K, 20 years old, From Tatopani VDC ward 7 Sindhupalchok district, Living in Tent No 86
3. Junu B.K , 25 years old, From Ghumthang VDC ward 7 sindhupalchok district, Living in Tent No 51
4 Koplila B.K, 21 years old, From Ghumthang VDC ward 7 Sindhupalchok district, Living in Tent No 31
5.Sirmaya Tamang, 23 yrs, From Baruwa VDC ward 5 Sindhupalchok district, Living in Tent 43
6. Nima dolma Tamang, 20 yrs, From Baruwa-5 Sindhupalchok Living in Tent 45
7.Sushmita raut,18 yrs, From Listi-9 Sindhupalchok living in Tent 83
There are photos of 5 of these women in my photo gallery. Madan (The manager of the resettlement camp) is sending me photos of the other women plus also photos and profile for the remaining 4 women. So watch this space.
How can you help? Consider sponsoring a woman to provide her with adequate food and nutrition for the remainder of her pregnancy, and then warm clothing for when her wee babe is born. Imagine being born into a tent town in winter. In their villages, these people are used to being able to light fires within their homes to keep warm - here in a tent, they cannot (are not allowed to) do that. Warmth for all - especially a newborn baby - will be so essential.
You can name a specific woman to donate to or your donation can be a general donation. If you wish it to go to a certain woman please specify in the comments when you make your donation.
Check out all the other photos of camp life. It never ceases to amaze me how the Nepali people just get on with it. Please help.
I visited this camp recently whilst in Nepal and it touched me to see 1700+ people crammed into such a small area. My midwifery background struck a chord with me when I learnt there were 11 pregnant women, so I decided to create a fundraiser for them.
Resettlement disbanded 4 November 2015
The people of the Bode Resettlement Camp have all been sent back to their home in Sindulpachok. One of the pregnant women - Maya gave birth to a stillborn baby boy recently. The other women are yet to have their babies. All funds will get to these women through my American Nepal-based contact.
Thank you so much for your help :-)
