Devonport Peninsula Precincts Society held a movie night fund-raiser at The Vic Cinema on Monday the 13th of November that sold to just one short of capacity. Funds from this and other events, together with donations made directly and through this page, have reached the goal of covering all legal, design and planning expenses associated with the successful legal appeal to the Environment Court in the matter of the Devonport retirement village. The fund-raising appeal has been an amazing and generous effort by a great many people. Thank you to all who have contributed, with time, goods, skills, and donations. Together we've made our community better.

  • Environment Court Decision Reached

      14 June 2017
    Main image

The Environment Court has ordered that the legal appeal of the consent to build a large retirement village on Auckland's North Shore in Devonport is settled. The appellant, Devonport Peninsula Precincts Society is satisfied with the significant remedies the community has achieved.

Of specific concern was that the original proposed development did not ensure a mix of building heights or variation of build form when viewed from streets, public space, and the adjoining residential locality.

The agreement reached in mediation reduced the bulk and dominance of the buildings, breaking three large buildings at the elevated western end of the development in to six smaller buildings surrounding a large courtyard.

Greater porosity has been achieved across the site.

There has been a significant change to the orientation of the central core of the largest building on the lower, eastern end of the site to improve internal amenity, reduce the apparent building length, and continue the open space of Regent Street within the site.

When viewed from the south, the height of the overall village skyline silhouette has been lowered, reducing visual dominance.

Thanks to all those who have donated to support this successful appeal - this is your win! If you haven't yet; please give generously and be part of successfully putting this early decision under the new Unitary Plan right.

  • Overwhelming Response to Yard Sale

      13 April 2017
    Main image

The organisers of the The Great Lake Road Yard Sale were overwhelmed by the community's response and it clearly points to a ground swell of support along the Devonport peninsula.

The event raised $19k, all of which goes to support the community's Environment Court appeal to Ryman Healthcare's plans for a huge retirement village on the peninsula. The community has set a target of $75k for its appeal.

The group of volunteers were left aghast at the volume and quality of items local people donated to the sale including kayaks, a piano, original artworks, antiques, and even a car.

The community group's chair, Iain Rea, said "hundreds turned out to support the event. Many told me they were on board because we are organised, our goals are realistic, and the appeal is ultimately necessary to ensure that the Devonport peninsula is developed appropriately now and in the future.

We are not aiming to stop Ryman. If you look at our requests, we are not asking for the world, just changes that will ensure that their development - which will still be by far the biggest single development in Devonport - is more in keeping with its surroundings."
