Earthquake relief for Nicola and family in Ecuador

  • 23/4/16

      23 April 2016

Nicola and Dario and the twins are shaken, but alive and trying to get on with the clean up on the farm, where they have plenty of veggies and family have brought in dried staples. They do not have access to internet and their office in Canoa was completely destroyed, that means computers, records and Eco-papel workshop. They are working on removing all the unstable buildings and trying to save or recycle all they can, fortunately much of their construction was with natural materials. They need strong hands from volunteers and they need money to finance the work.

    Dear family,

I am sending this message via a volunteer that was here during the earthquake in Canoa and came after that to Rio Muchacho but made it to Quito today. (Hey, my name is Lena and Nico gave me a paper with this mail for you so that you are informed, I made it today with a lot of different cars to Quito and can send you this mail).

"We don't know when there will be internet and power in the area, so don't worry, we are all alive and we were lucky not to get a scratch. We are camping in a field and put a makeshift kitchen outside as well. Canoa is flattened and our office too. It is under a 4 story hotel but the two bottom floors sandwiched. The ecopaper workshop was there, so I guess that is the end of that too. Our house is apparently fine but it is safer to live outside until the after shocks subside. The main house is still standing but not in very good shape. The cabin you stayed in flipped and is half way over the bank. All cabins were affected or flattened. We are just trying to keep the animals fed ( with no pumps or shredder) until we figure out what to do. The cistern is full but the river is dry (due to a landslide).

The upside is that he kids get to see lots of helicopters and we get to go camping!

Please send this also to the rest of the family.

    Love to all!

    Hi family and friends

Dad had a call from Dario early this morning.

He had travelled to San Vicente by walking and motor bike (25km).

They are all safe. They are sleeping in a little tent so as not to be in risk of further building collapse with after shocks.

Their office and paper making in Canoa is destroyed. Local seaside town of around 5000 people. Many are dead.

There is no fuel to travel with their ancient land rover.

The new highway is a huge mess

They have enough food for the meantime.

Their leased apartment in Bahia is still standing.

Have no indication of what they are thinking about doing in the future, for now it is all about survival.

I have sent some money to tide them over but have no idea when they will be able to access the money.

The bank is in San Vicente or may be Bahia. Of course markets are closed and distribution of food is limited.

    Love Chris

Nic rang on her last bit of battery.

    They are all OK.

    Their house is OK

    The main house not sure.

A good proportion of their buildings are damaged.

Their friendly driver Elvis is dead.

Canoa is wrecked and there are fatalities.

Will keep you posted if I hear anything else

    Love Chris
