Following surgery to remove a large 14cm tumour, help support Nixie as she now faces intensive chemotherapy, fighting a rare form of cancer.
Hawke's Bay
At 20, life should be about chasing dreams. For Nixie, an outgoing, strong willed young woman, life was full of potential alongside her partner of three years and her close family of parents, brothers, sister, and grandparents.
Nixie already showed incredible strength a year and a half ago during painful surgery for ovarian cysts and an endometriosis diagnosis.
But on 31st August, time stopped.
She was diagnosed with a Malignant mixed germ cell tumour, a rare highly aggressive form of ovarian cancer accounting for less than 5% of diagnoses, targeting young women.
Her reality shift was unimaginable. On 7th September, major surgery removed a massive 14cm tumour and one ovary. Before healing, she faced heavy decisions, navigating a rushed, emotional medical process to protect her options for a future family.
On 8th October, surgeons implanted a chemotherapy port into her chest. This collateral damage forced her to put her planned academic studies completely on hold. Now, Nixie is stepping into a punishing, intensive 10-week chemotherapy schedule. Across 3 gruelling cycles of daily hospital blocks and weekly follow-ups, she is fighting to prevent the return of this disease.
Confronting this, she faces severe immune suppression, hair loss, and total body disruption. Treatment also carries a lifelong risk of lung toxicity. Enduring this intense treatment slashes her recurrence risk down from 50% but she shouldn't fight this alone.
