Nourished for Nil

  • October 2017 update

      1 October 2017

Nourished for Nil has come a long way since this Givealittle page was set up earlier this year.

From Monday, May 15th we began redistributing from our NEW DEPOT at 1004 Karamu Road in Hastings!! (Next to the self-serve GULL petrol station). We want to thank Simon Tremain for the generous donation of the old Tremains building.

We collect/receive imperfect but perfectly edible or surplus fruit and vegetables most days of the week.

People ask us where the food used to go before we became a drop-off point. Several things can happen. Produce can be turned back into the soil; it can be composted or left to rot, donated to other food services, fed to animals or end up in the landfill. We are so grateful to the producers who choose to support us so that we can pass it on to others. Indeed, composting is a good thing, so is feeding animals but ugly, oversized, too small, damaged produce STILL tastes good and is nutritious for humans!

In June alone, we collected and redistributed $18,510 worth of produce or 6,630 kgs to the lovely people of Hawkes Bay!! That's an awful lot of onions, potatoes, mandarins, pumpkin etc...We would love to give special mention to our two biggest ongoing produce donors - APATU FARMS and TRUE EARTH organics for trusting us with their surplus.

June also saw us as the lucky recipients of $1,004 from Z Energy's Good in the Hood campaign - a huge thank you to everyone who voted for us at Z Heretaunga Street.

In August, we hosted our first FUNDRAISER at the Little Black Bird cafe on Market St in Hastings. It was a RESOUNDING success! We raised nearly $3000, had 65 supporters attend, and enjoyed many plates of mouth-watering canapes cooked up by chefs Ben Cruse and Andrew Saxon. It was accompanied with wine kindly donated by Craggy Range Winery, Alpha Domus or a refreshing glass of beer from Brave Brewery.

Nourished for Nil is now humming along nicely. We are regularly serving over 800 people every week and collecting close to 2 tonnes of food.

Through the INCREDIBLE generosity of a few local donors Nourished for Nil will be staying at 1004 Karamu Rd for the foreseeable future!! We can't adequately express our gratitude, but because of this gift, we can continue bringing this service to our community.

This now sees us needing to update the use of funds on this Givealittle campaign as we are no longer looking for funds to secure a premise, but now to help cover the ongoing costs for our premises, as well as purchasing and maintaining shelving, tables, bins and all other running costs.

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated time, money and surplus food to our service as well as everyone who comes along to our depot to help STOP our generously donated GOOD FOOD FROM ENDING UP IN THE BIN 😎 That is what we are all about! 👍 Zero Food Waste!
