Our team has been selected to represent NZ at the Women’s International Match Racing (WIM) series; the pinnacle of women's match racing!

Recently our NZ Women's Match Racing team (RNZYS) was selected to compete in the first WIM series event of 2018. This event will be held in Helsinki, Finland, in J/80 yachts from June 25th to 29th. This is our best opportunity to showcase women's match racing in NZ, but we need your help!

The WIM series is a year-long circuit of the highest level of women's match racing events. Match racing is an exciting sailing discipline where two boats race each other around a course, using boat handling, knowledge of rules, and teamwork to cross the finish line first.

We are incredibly lucky to be invited to this event where we will race against some of the top 20 women's match racing teams in the world! We are the only team in Australasia that has been invited to compete.

The New Zealand Women's Match Race team is:

Celia Willison, 19 (Helm)- Winning team at Hardy Cup Youth Match Racing Regatta 2018. 3rd place Marianassess Women’s Match Racing Regatta in Sydney 2017.

Charlotte Porter, 19 (Main)- Competed in Busan Match Cup 2017 (WIM event), winning team NZ Womens 50:50 Keelboat nationals in 2017.

Paige Cook, 25 (Trim)- WIM series (2013), 2017 sailed with Magenta Project on Turn the Tide on Plastic.

Alison Kent, 23 (Bow)- 2017 Rolex Sydney to Hobart on Climate Action Now with the Magenta Project.

Erica Dawson, 23 (Pit and tactics)- Campaigning in the 49erFX Olympic class. 13th at 49erFX Worlds in 2017.

Our goal is to be a competitive and successful women's match racing team. We also hope to inspire more female sailors to follow us down the match racing pathway.

First of all, we would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far! With your help and help from other incredible people, we are booked to go to our first Women’s International Match Race Series event in Finland.

The past month for us has been very busy with training in the Elliot 7s at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, searching for funding and planning some regattas for later in the year as well as doing our usual study and work!

Our training has consisted of boat handling drills and a lot of practice start against other RNZYS match racing teams. Training has been going very well, we have been making big improvements against the other teams. We are lucky to have the support of the RNZYS who let us use the boats and sometimes give us some coaching!
