Lets Help Katie our NZ Last Person Standing running event Winner to the USA, for Big’s Backyard Ultra
Auckland
In April this year, Katie Wright completed an incredible run of over 200km at the inaugural Riverhead Backyard Relaps Ultra and Relay. As a result, she has now been given the opportunity to represent New Zealand over in the USA, home of the original Last Person Standing race - Big's Backyard Ultra! This is the World Champs of the Last Person Standing format running event.
Although Katie was the winner of the coveted ‘Golden Coin’ to gain entry into the prestigious Big’s Backyard Ultra - the trip, without our help, would be totally self-funded. The initial goal is $10,000 NZD but let’s see how much we can raise together!
We would love to set a new tradition here in NZ that sends our NZ Backyard Ultra Champ each year over to the USA for Big's Backyard Ultra! Let’s give Katie and all future winners the real opportunity to go and fly our flag and literally put her best foot forward to go and kick some arse - with all the flights, accommodation, support food and gear she needs, to give her the best opportunity possible to compete at the highest level! If you had won, wouldn't you love the community to chip in and get you there too?
We would love to make this a tradition, that we get behind our champ every year, and raise funds before, during and after the event so they can go and claim the ultimate Last Person Standing prize at Big’s - No pressure Katie!
So if you would have loved this type of gesture if you had won, please do donate.
If you know Katie and want to help her and her crew please donate.
If you want to see our top runner represent NZ on the global stage please donate!
Please share with all the running community or anyone that knows Katie and let’s nail this thing in record speed!! How quickly can we reach the goal figure?
There are also rumours that if we manage to raise surplus funds there’s a possibility that the master of pain himself - Lazarus Lake might make the trip over to NZ….
Thank you in advance for your support, Katies adventures over there will be shared and likewise, her preparation.
I organise the New Zealand event with the winner of our event getting an entry into the world champs. We want to raise funds each year for the winner to get to the US for those world champs.
To get $10K for Katie. To fly her and her support crew over, accommodation and get the set up! Once we have smashed the initial $10K target any additional funds are placed in a kitty to assist the next winner of the Riverhead Backyard Relaps Ultra.
A massive thanks!! 5 November 2019
Hey team of amazing support crew - yes, that's you!
I just wanted to say a huge huge thanks once again for all your support. I have no fitting words.
Without your backing I wouldn't have been able to get to the start line let alone, if we are being honest, smash all expectations! The fact that I knew I had you all backing me at home (and around the globe) was a huge psychological factor in the drive to continue!
I don't think it's a secret that I was a little upset at having to quit: that doesn't mean I'm not hugely excited and proud to have gone as far as I did, it's an epic achievement! On paper it definitely looked like I didn't stand a chance but sometimes it pays to ignore expectations and your belief in me helped to do just that!....everyone loves an underdog, right! 😉
I've written a race report for the Backyard Ultra via Facebook/insta
https://www.facebook.com/katiewrightdoyourimpossible/ and @do_your_impossible - have a read! I don't really hold back on the ups and downs of those 50 hours and the aftermath I had yet to experience.
For now though, it's time to rest, recover and restart training.
I can't wait for next year - I have some HUGE plans! Starting with the Revenant (New Zealands' answer to the Barkley) and of course a repeat of Big's Backyard next year with a few surprises in between.
I'd love for you guys to continue the support and follow along my journey via social media.
If there are any buisnesses out there that want to be part of something special and can get behind me by supporting through sponsorship, I'd love to hear from you. Competing internationally isn't cheap!
Thanks again,
Katie
