OBYC's youth centre was damaged in the CHCH earthquake. Opportunity of reduced cost of labour to renovate the upstairs of Opawa Baptist Church into a youth centre has arisen. This will result in flattening of the floor, creation of a mini-stage, building a wall and two doors to enclose the space, providing couches, sound and lighting, and a small office. The aim is to create a space where young people can come and hang out, chat with leaders, run youth services, movie nights and games nights, etc.
Opawa Baptist Youth Community (OBYC) is a community group of young people in the Waltham/Opawa area who come together a few times a week for youth services, hang outs, jams, movie nights and fun activities. We currently have no youth centre as it was damaged in the 2010 Christchurch Earthquake. Our youth leaders also serve as 24-7 Youth Workers in Te Waka Unua school and interact with young people from 7 local schools.
