One-off specialist treatment in Auckland for one of our kids. Not publicly funded, not covered by insurance.

We're fundraising to get one of our children to Auckland for specialist treatment they can't get here. It's a one-off block of six sessions over three days, and follow-up can mostly be done by video from home. They can't travel alone, so it's flights and accommodation for two.

We're keeping the details private, including which child. They've asked us to and we think that's fair enough. What we will say is that this is their best shot at avoiding invasive procedures down the track, and at carrying on with the stuff that makes them them.

If you know us from school, please don't mention it to your kids. School is the one place where everything still feels normal, and we'd like to keep it that way.

It isn't publicly funded and our insurance won't cover it. Treatment, flights, accommodation and getting around Auckland come to about $3,500.

If you can chip in, we're grateful. If you can't, that's genuinely fine.

Use of funds

Specialist treatment in Auckland, return flights, accommodation for four nights. If we don't reach the target, every dollar still goes towards the same trip. It just means waiting longer or finding another way to make up the gap.

I've started writing this post about four times now because I didn't know how to say it.

Since we shared the Givealittle page we've felt everything at once. Happy. Honoured. Excited. Nervous. A bit embarrassed too, because asking for help feels uncomfortable. And so grateful we can hardly stand it.

The response has floored us. People we barely know have donated. People we haven't seen since school have messaged. We didn't expect any of it.

Because of you, the booking is made. Treatment starts next month.

A few weeks ago that felt impossible. It's happening because a lot of people decided to help a family they didn't have to help.

You've also been generous enough that we've gone past what we asked for. That extra isn't going to sit there. It'll go towards the equipment and practical bits that make this easier to live with day to day, and towards some support for the emotional side of it, because honestly that's the part that terrifies us.
