Operation for a special dog

  • Barrie’s progress

      12 March 2020

To all my wonderful contributors, thank you again for enabling Barrie’s surgery. He has fully recovered from the operation and is copingso much better. We will always have to be careful but it is such a joy to see him playing happily without pain. Sometimes, after a boisterous day I see him favour his left hind leg, but never the miserable limping where often, he could not even use that leg.

Thank you so much from both of us.

  • Post-op Barrie

My little boy has had his surgery. He was described as a “perfect little gentleman” by the vet nurses (proud mama moment)! The photo shows Barrie on his “lounging chair” mattress. If you look at the inside edge of the left back leg, you can see the 11 cms incision. (I had no idea brindle left the same pattern on the skin as it does on the fur! The shaved leg doesn’t look very different!) The leg is swollen but that is normal and expected for the next seven days. Next Saturday, he will be back at the vet for his first post-op check up - then it’s another seven weeks of confinement and then physio.

At present he is on pain relief and antibiotics. I have discovered a neat trick. If he goes to lick the incision, I grab an iso-propyl alcohol wipe and gently wipe the wound with it. Instantly stops licking. I researched tastes that dogs hate and iso-propyl alcohol is one of the top 5! And it’s an extremely effective anti-septic!

Now we embark on the healing process. Thank you to all the sweet souls who donated. Being able to do this for Barry means the world to me.

  • Hanging in there

Hi to all the lovely generous people reading this. Barrie is hanging in there although he has visibly slowed down. His pain increases quite rapidly now but, like all dogs, he is as loving and uncomplaining as ever - unless you are noisy workmen outside! Then he gives them an earful.

Surgery time will be late December - early January and we are just on three quarters of the way there. Please keep spreading the word - every dollar counts. Thank you! Photo of Barrie with his BFF, Lucy, who visits often on weekends.

  • Still fundraising for Barrie’s surgery!

This is Barrie, watching TV with his human- sits with his leg stretched out- he seems more comfortable sitting like a little human! You can see some of the swelling over the left knee.

Thanks to everyone for their support thus far. However, we are still well short of the target. With my savings added we’re sitting around $1800, still $1000 short of the full cost of the treatment Barrie requires. So, please keep my little bloke in mind - share the link with all your friends, so hopefully we can reach our target.

    Thanks again for your support.
