Preserving the legacy and protection of the Rangitata River
Canterbury
In 2019, anglers successfully stood up for the Rangitata River, preventing a proposed additional 10m3 water take from proceeding. This victory highlighted a crucial lesson - the importance of recorded evidence in defending our rivers. Following the guidance of our expert witness, anglers embarked on a mission to document the Oral Histories of the River. This scientific approach, conducted in collaboration with the University of Canterbury, is now 2/3 complete. The next phase involves bringing this invaluable resource to the pre-print stage, ensuring it is fully referenced and citable. Subsequent steps include peer review and publication, solidifying its credibility and impact.
Pre Print Stage $6K
Peer Review and Publication $10K

Future Rivers, the New Zealand Salmon Anglers Association and New Zealand Federation of Freshwater Anglers are working together to preserve and enhance our outdoor freshwater fisheries.
The funds will be used to pay the University of Canterbury to finish this work to at least the Pre Print stage, and hopefully peer reviewed and published
