Oscar’s Journey
Hi, my name is Oscar Cakebread. I have just turned two and I am about to undertake a journey that will hopefully change my life and that of my family.
I have a very simple dream, just like most other 2 year old kiwi boys. I want to be able to play outside, chase a ball, ride a bike, try new things and generally have lots of fun.
My problem is that about a year ago I was diagnosed with spastic diplegia, cerebral palsy. Now I have physio numerous times a week with my wonderful homecare team and I have had MRI’s and Botox treatments under general anesthetic…… which I hate!!!!!!!!!! Although I work super hard at physio and have made huge strides, every day, life is hard, not just for me but also for my family.
My family is me, my mum Anna, my dad Chris and my two sisters, Lily, 9 and Amelie 6.
On a recent trip to see my Grandparents I was lucky enough to see a top team of specialists and physio’s at the Portland Hospital in London. At this hospital they offer an amazing procedure, Selective Dorsal Rhitzomy (SDR). This is major surgery but along with the intensive physio that I will have to undergo afterwards to retrain my body, it will help to relieve the symptoms of my spasticity permanently. The specialists believe that I am a perfect candidate for this surgery which is great news!
Unfortunately the surgery is not offered here in New Zealand, which is a real pain as I have to be so far from home and that we have to raise the money to fund the operation, the intense physio that follows and for having my family with me.
This is an amazing opportunity that will allow me to fulfill my dream of becoming a normal kiwi kid, but I do need to ask for some help to make this happen. Mum and Dad are working hard to put on some events to raise some money, but every little bit counts, whether it is giving up a coffee for a day and donating or collecting your loose change and donating. Whatever you are able to contribute to my journey is truly welcomed and please know that my family and I will be forever grateful.
I am Oscars dad and we are looking to raise funds to allow him to go to England for SDR surgery to relieve his cerebral palsy symptoms
We are underway 27 August 2015
Just wanted to say a huge thank you to all of you who have donated so far. We are on our way to getting Oscar his surgery and are just so grateful for the donations so far
