What an amazing adventure. This was billed as the trip of a lifetime and it lived up to expectations. For many of the students this was the first overnight trip that they have been on with a school group.

Windy Wellington it certainly was, but that did not stop us adhering to our itinerary. We visited Te Papa and we were in awe of the amazing Gallipoli exhibition and we surprised the tour guide with the wealth of prior knowledge that many of us attributed to our Social Science and History classes. Weta workshop was a highlight for many of us, from the floppy silicon arm to brandishing weapons, freakish masks and posing with Gollum.

We had a lot of laughter and fun which was interspersed with some serious learning and thought provoking interviews and meetings at Parliament. We presented our petition and expressed our views on inclusive education and disability issues with the ministers. This opportunity to be heard was a proud moment for many of us.

Overall, this was a great bonding experience and we are very grateful to the school and wider community for helping us achieve our goal.

  • Increased Costs!

I am just adding an update to explain why we need more funds.

It is not that we are greedy, it is just that the transportation costs have escalated. As you can imagine it is not easy finding transport for this number of wheelchairs, especially powerchairs. The Easyrider wheelchair friendly bus was the mode of transport that I had planned to use, however, this proved untenable due to the length of time it would take to get to Wellington with that number of chairs (Heavy). I would have needed to have found accessible/accommodation in another city/town or respite care to give the driver his required break etc. So instead we are using a range of modes of transport. NZ rail can only transport two wheelchairs at a time so we have one student travelling by train, some are flying and others are travelling by mobility van. This means that we will now need additional mobility transport when we are in Wellington as well. This has increased the transport costs markedly. Hotels courtesy vans are not accessible for wheelchairs so that has to be factored in as well.

Thank you so much for your continued generosity. We have been keeping a tally of our donations but due to a busy end of term we have not updated the tally.

St Peter Chanel School in Hamilton have been very generous as has the generous benefactor who often tops us up to the next thousand!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you everybody!

    Check out the tally.
