Paula Matafahi's Grade 4 Brain Cancer Fight - We need your help

$70,216 donated

This page has been set up to help Paula access unfunded drugs in the USA to offer hope and relieve his symptoms.

Manawatu / Whanganui

Paula is an extraordinary 19 year old young man whose spirit shines brightly even in adversity.

Diagnosed with Grade 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme brain cancer, Paula’s journey has taken a challenging turn, yet he remains a beacon of strength and hope for family and friends. He comes from a loving family, blessed with an amazing mum and four adoring sisters. Tragically, Paula lost his father (Ben) to cancer in 2021. At just 15 years old, rather than retreating into grief, he stepped up as the strong male figure his family needed, embodying resilience and love.

Before his diagnosis, Paula was vibrant and full of life, attending Palmerston North Boys High School where he excelled in Rugby Union. He also proudly represented Manawatu in Rugby League and Volleyball.

Sadly, Paula's recent journey through chemotherapy, radiation and unfunded drug treatment has been unsuccessful.

In the hope of better options, Paula and his mum, Nia have travelled to the USA where he is now under the care of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. He’s preparing for further treatment and the possibility of a clinical trial that could give him relief from his symptoms.

This next stage of his journey will take place over the coming months and comes at a huge financial cost.

Those who have been touched by Paula and his family’s kindness know how special this family is. Now, it’s our turn to support and show gratitude for the light they bring into our lives.

We need to try again ❤️  1 June 2025

Kia ora everyone,

It's been a little while since our last update, and I wanted to take a moment to thank you all again for the overwhelming support you’ve shown so far. Paula and his whānau have felt your love every step of the way, your generosity has lifted them through some of their darkest days.

Over the last six months, Paula has undergone several rounds of treatment. Despite all his bravery and strength, we’ve recently had the heartbreaking news that the treatments so far haven’t been effective.

In the hope of better options, Paula and his mum, Nia have travelled to the USA where he’s now under the care of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. He’s preparing for further treatment and the possibility of a clinical trial that could give him relief from his symptoms.

This next stage of his journey will take place over the coming months and comes at a huge financial cost. As a friend of the family, I’m reaching out to ask - if you’re able to help in any way, it would mean the world.

To give you an idea of what they’re facing, one of his many appointments on 29 May cost $40,000 USD.

Every single donation goes directly toward Paula’s care and the hope of getting him home, safe to his sisters who are waiting so patiently and missing him and their mum dearly. If you can give, please do. If not, sharing this page also makes a big difference.

From the bottom of our hearts - thank you. Your aroha is what keeps this family going.

With love and so much gratitude❤️

Sheree
