Persephone had her second surgery on her hip last Wednesday. The initial plan was to toggle the hip into place. However, she had suffered significant damage to the structural integrity surrounding the hip. This meant they opted to shave down the ball of her femoral head, and suture this into place as close as possible to the hip joint. This is potentially a better outcome anyhow, as cats with toggled hips are likely to get develop early onset arthritis, and would go onto having this procedure as the solution. Essentially, we're skipping a step! Cats can go on to lead a normal and healthy life like this, will a full range of motion in the hip, meaning she will be able to run, jump and climb as normal if her healing goes well. She many just have a bit of a funky step, as its common to have a gate abnormality after this.

She has been eating and excreting nicely, and has even begun hopping around on her knee, which is amazing, meaning she can easily adjust herself into a comfortable position. She will be cage bound for six weeks, so we are lucky to have the neighbors large dog crate which we have snugged out with blankets.

As some of you may know, I am a Herbalist, so I've ordered in some different herbal and homeopathic formulas to assist in her healing, which are safe to take alongside the analgesic medications she is also on.

We are so looking forward to having her home! Miso most of all.

    Many thanks again x

  • Percy is half way there!

      5 September 2023

A quick update for all those who have kindly donated, or are visiting this page for the first time!

Persephone underwent surgery yesterday, and the plan was to fix both the knee and hip in one procedure. They successfully completed her knee cross pinning, but were unable to toggle her right hip as her blood pressure began to drop, so they needed to bring her up from the anesthetic.

She will undergo another surgery on Wednesday or Thursday to toggle the hip, and be home by the end of the week. We are so thrilled!

The vets have said they will do there best to keep costs as originally quoted, even though she will need to be hospitalised for a lot longer than expected, and now requires two separate procedures. They were so amazed that we were able to crowdfund for wee Percy, that they want to be able to follow through with her repairs. There will however be a few extra costs, but we are overwhelmed and so thankful for all the support so far.

Miso has been missing her sister deeply, and doing scouting rounds of the house looking in Percy's favourite sleep spots for her. We cannot wait to reunite these two sweeties.

    Our deepest thanks again,

    Renee and Joel
