Phil Hill Memorial Scholarship Fund
Avondale, Auckland
Mr Phil Hill passed away unexpectedly on 20 Apr 22. His teaching career spanned 50 years, 34 of which were at Avondale College, and almost 30 of them as Deputy Principal. Phil taught Geography, Social Studies, History, Art, Art History, Health and Careers and Psychology. He introduced Psychology to Avondale College in the mid-90’s and then pioneered its development across New Zealand.
Just prior to his passing Phil was in the process of establishing an annual award to celebrate creative thinking and creativity at the Avondale College. The trophy was just being finished at the time of his passing. The intent is to use all donated funds, which the family will then supplement, to establish a scholarship to accompany the award to aid the recipient in their creative pursuits.
Phil had a real issue with flowers, and couldn’t fathom “Why people would want to harvest the reproductive organs of plants for decoration”. What can we say? He was a quirky sort of guy. He’d much rather any money that would have been spent on flowers was used in a way that was going to help aid others in their educational pursuits; something he dedicated his life to.
The funds will be gifted to Avondale College to enable it to establish an annual scholarship that will be awarded to the student that receives the Phil Hill Memorial Trophy for Creativity.
Jason and Lisa on behalf of the family thank you so very much. I’d love to know what your connection was to my father. Feel free to contact me through Avondale College.
Thank you so very much guys. The Brigade was one of three pillars of his life and this means a lot to us. It is a big boost to the scholarship fund and greatly appreciated.
