Phil's Great White Shark Dream

The marine environment has always been a passion of mine, especially sharks. Even as a young lad I was dreaming about working with them. So, as I grew older, I began pursuing this dream. I gained my degree in marine biology but hit a roadblock after not being able to pass my commercial dive medical due to my asthma.

I took a “short” hiatus pursuing outdoor instruction while I figured my life out but short ended up being 6 years. The marine dream has never left me, so I’ve decided it’s time to give it another shot. I’ve joined the Blue Wilderness Shark Research Unit (SRU) in South Africa as a (pay to go) intern starting in June and I need some help to get there (I’m saving but the outdoor instruction gig is not the best paid job).

The SRU is a team dedicated to advancing scientific understanding and conservations efforts whilst trying to uncover the mysteries of shark behaviour, ecology, and population dynamics. Their studies contribute to valuable insights, informing policies for responsible shark species management and the surrounding ecosystem. Their mission is to protect marine ecosystems and ensure a harmonious coexistence between sharks and the environment through education, community outreach programs, inspiring a passion for ocean protection, and empowering youth.

I hope to bring back the skills and knowledge I gain from this 10-week internship and be able to apply it in a New Zealand context and chase that marine dream.
