Hoka Hey Charity Motorcycle ride from Daytona, Florida to Homer, Alaska raising funds for Pikiao Hauora.
Rotorua, Bay Of Plenty
Kēpa is taking part in the 2024 Hoka Hey Challenge in North America in August. The challenge involves riding an American V-twin motorcycle from the start in Daytona, Florida to the finish in Homer, Alaska. Challenge participants must follow printed instructions and are GPS monitored to ensure the rider follows the correct route. Participants must camp beside their motorcycle, and observe the road rules.
I have been accepted to ride in the Hoka Hey Challenge and my rider number is #1242. This means that following this year's challenge, less than 1300 riders have attempted this ride, since it began in 2010. This year, the route commemorates the original 2010 route designed by Jim Red Cloud of the Lakota Sioux. The route passes through 26 reservations and other culturally important sites asserting the right of the Indigenous Peoples of North America to travel across the continent.
Each participant raises funds for their chosen charity. My charity is Pikiao Hauora who provide holistic health services for their patients who mainly live in the Rotorua district. All preventative health services are provided free of charge including mirimiri and rongoa.
I belong to the Ngati Pikiao people, and am registered with Te Runanga O Ngati Pikiao Trust to use their health services.
The funds raised will be passed to Te Runanga O Ngati Pikiao to support the continued delivery of holistic health and social services. Expenditure of the funds raised for Pikiao Hauora will be accounted for as part of trust's Annual Report to the Charities Office.
