Recently an exciting opportunity has arisen for Alysha to visit the Pacific Islands on a cruise ship with 2 of her caregivers
Whangarei, Northland
May 7th 2010 is a day Alysha Cosgrave will never forget.
She was just 19 years old at the time when the car she was traveling in with friends crashed leaving her with life changing injuries. As she sat helpless in the back of the car unable to move her body she instantly knew the situation was dire.
Not making a fuss or a sound Alysha allowed the paramedics to free her from the wreckage. Alysha was taken to the hospital where she was told her spinal cord was severed by 95% and she’d broken vertebrae C4, C5 and C6. It was at that moment she learned she would live the rest of her life as a tetraplegic and would need around the clock care.
With support from her wonderful family and loving boyfriend Chris Malafu, the months spent rehabilitating in the spinal unit were just about bearable. Alysha was itching to get back to a normal routine with her boyfriend, parents and animals.
One year later, plans were made and the future was looking brighter for Alysha and Chris. This happiness was tragically short lived however as on the 20th April 2011 her soul mate and best friend Chris Malafu, (age 19) suffered a fatal asthma attack just meters away from a helpless Alysha. Alysha was distraught with grief. Her days had just became darker and she spiralled into a very deep depression.
Alyshas hopes and dreams for her future was that she wanted to travel, starting in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands, especially to Tonga which was Christopher's heritage.
My name is Heather and I have been Alyshas night carer for over 6 years
