    A big heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to Angela Herbert’s Givealittle page which has now closed. She would also like to thank Jen at HAIR-itage for the recent haircut and care xoxo. Angela is tremendously grateful for everyone's kindness, care and support since the accident in early February when she was struck by a van who failed to give way.

    Angela is now back at home and she says it seems like her heart has stopped. She still has limited mobility and can do assisted walking only with only a few more steps gained every week. Living with constant pelvic pain, numbness and FND in the left leg and left arm, a stoma prolapse, hearing loss and PTSD have all taken their toll on her.

    She will never be the same as she was before the accident and life now is very different. She is unable to drive, cook, plant a summer vege garden, weed, work, or reach the ground at this stage.

    The support received even from random strangers has all meant so much. Please keep Angela in your thoughts and if you would like to reach out in any way, please do, with gardening etc as this will make all the difference during the long recovery ahead.

      Kia kaha Angela, I often think of you and what you are going through, life is just rubbish sometimes. My friend Claire nursed you many months ago and told me a bit about you, no name or anything but when I saw your page I thought it was probably you. Hope life gets better, Im sure it will.

      I am away for a month from tomorrow but will make contact on my return. I would like to help you in some way. Maybe vacuuming or something..not many talents in the gardening department !! Hang on in there x

  • An Angela Herbert Update

    Angela has been moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility. It has been an incredibly tough year for her since she was struck by a van while riding her bike on the 8th February on St Vanguard Street. Necessary lifesaving surgery in June was a major setback and a huge hurdle to overcome. As she learns to walk again and navigates serious injuries, still with ongoing setbacks she is extremely grateful for all the wonderful support she has received from the community.

    She is appreciating her new abode - having more space and able to feel a little like she is getting closer to being back in the world. Life will never be the same as she continues this unknown and long road to recovery and she remains daunted at the thought of eventually returning home and how she will cope with on going flashbacks and anxiety and if she will ever return to a life that is normal and past activities.

    However, this experience has given her a new goal, the "light at the end of the tunnel", a dream that is helping to keep her spirits up – to find a way of creating an oasis for rest and respite for people who need time to heal. In the meantime, she is continuing on her own very tough journey and sends her love and gratitude for all those who have supported her and contributed to her Givealittle page which will stay open until the end of September.

  • A Message From Angela

    I am overwhelmed with the loving care and support I have received in the past 6 months that I have been in hospital. Words don't express how grateful I am at the kindness shown to me through my Givealittle page. At times in the past I thought I was so alone however I know this not to be true anymore. I am slowly improving although with some setbacks. I am very weak and losing weight still. There are many different health issues that I am learning to come to terms with. I truly miss everyone's friendly faces and being out in the beautiful world.

  • Givealittle Page Extension for Angela

    This page has been extended because, after 6 months in hospital, Angela is still very ill. She still cannot walk, is taking a long time to recover from the bowel perforation operation and the pleurisy she contracted after that. Her need for help to recover just keeps growing. A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported her so far on this horrendous journey. Next week she will be writing an update herself to bring you further up to date.

  • Another Setback for Angela

    Pain to Purpose

    Despite now having developed pleurisy, experiencing excruciating pain and feeling very fragile yet again, Angela Herbert does not want her 5 months in hospital so far and all the suffering that has come with it, to go to waste. She has developed a longing for a Retreat/Respite centre, a place of rest and recovery for people like her that is away from a hospital setting in a place that is nurturing and will allow those who have been very ill to recover their emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health before facing everyday life again. This is her new Purpose. This extraordinary woman has many skills to co-ordinate such a plan and place and, as usual, she is thinking about others, despite her own ongoing trauma.   • Massive Setback for Angela

    Early last week Angela needed an emergency operation in the middle of the night as a result of a perforated bowel. This was the result of the huge amount of painkillers she has had to be on since the terrible accident that damged her pelvis so badly almost 5 months ago. She was told she had a 50% chance of survival and fortunately has pulled through. This is a major setback for her and she will now most likely permanently have to have a stoma bag. She has been in intensive care in a fragile state. I have decided to extend this Givealittle page because there is no telling how long Angela is going to be incapacitated and she needs all the financial help she can get. Please be careful when you are driving because one moment of inattention can completely change someone's life.

  • Bad News for Angela

    Angela’s orthopaedic specialist has told her that her pelvic injuries are the worst he has seen. Following new CT scans she has been told her left pelvis was like shattered glass and that she never will be able to run again, which is her passion. Before her accident, she was a distance runner and would usually train 50km a week. As you can imagine, this news has retraumatised her. She is still having to deal with intense pain, her left leg doesn’t work at all and she has PTSD with regular flashbacks to her accident. She also has Sensorineural hearing loss in her left ear since the accident.

    Angela misses her work, nature and chippy her cat. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. This currently feels like an impossible mountain to climb for her. She has spent 96 days hospital with more months ahead.

  • An Angela Update

    On the positive front, Angela’s brother came down from Auckland and was able to wheel her out very gingerly to dinner at Lone Star on Anzac Day where she was treated by her Tribal Nations MC bike friends at their get together after the Ride of Respect they had completed to raise over $1700 for the RSA. The excruciating pain to get there was worth it she says. After almost 3 months on her back in hospital, it was a chance to have a peek at the outside world, however briefly.

    Next week Angela has the first CT scan since the accident and will find out if she will need surgery on her 6 major pelvic fractures. She still cannot walk as her left leg won’t move, her left arm is slightly affected and now she has lost hearing in her left ear. Hopefully things will improve once the breaks are healed. This certainly is a rollercoaster ride.

    Angela continues to be overwhelmed by the love and support she has received and loves the days when her cat Chippy comes to visit.

  • A little bit of good news

    Angela has just found out that the nerves in her left leg are still alive. The reason she cannot use her leg at all is due to a bad break she has (in addition to all the big pelvic fractures). The surgeons believe she will be able to walk agin when the break mends although there is no idea how long this will take. She continues to be so grateful for all the wonderful donations which will help her rebuild her life eventually. We are so lucky to live in such a caring and loving place like NZ. The highlight of Angela's week is a visit from her beloved cat Chips. He settles down with her and brings enormous comfort.

  • Angela has a Visitor

    Angela has been able to have visits in hospital from her furry best friend. Nothing like a bit of fluffy comfort. She is still unsure of what is ahead with her rehabilitaiton and still can't walk.

  • Still a Long Road Ahead for Angela

    Angela continues to face a very long road to recovery and so much about her injuries remain uncertain. She cannot walk and may have operations ahead. She remains very grateful for your donations as she tries to cope while not being able to work.
