Please help Damiana retain her independence

  • New challenges, new costs

Damiana has now been out of Waikato Hospital for a fortnight and getting used to using the wheelchair that she had to buy with Givealittle money (she can't walk but is not eligible for a publicly funded wheelchair, which is pretty insane). She cannot walk on her feet but can get around on her knees, which helps as she learns to transition between her trike and her wheelchair. As pedalling is a controlled, repetitive movement she can cycle (most of the time) but has had to buy more equipment for her trike to compensate for weaker legs. Her 'let's just work out a solution' attitude is commendable, but the unanticipated need to buy a wheelchair has taken away the funds still required to keep her trike roadworthy. Her updated blog can be read here: https://lifeontheroadbybikeandonwheels.wordpress.com/?fbclid=IwAR3QJg8nYhTUzqPfh2HEeu45fdExWkSeXzWWFRaYuQpYCOIe3rbwhugzqRw

  • Wheelchair news

      24 April 2019

The latest update is that Damiana's legs continue to be troublesome and she is essentially paralysed. However because there is no formal diagnosis and she might get better she is not eligible for a wheelchair, even on loan (yay for the NZ health system!). So she will have to hire one for now and also look to getting a hand cycle to replace her trike. Looks like this page was set up just in time. More donations much appreciated!

  • Thank you,!

Hi everyone, well we have been making fantastic progress and it is humbling to see. Damiana has taken a turn for the worse and is currently in hospital with little feeling in her legs and no diagnosis why. To top it all off on her first night there somebody damaged her trike trying to steal it. Faced with the need to repair that and perhaps get a hand powered trike if her legs don't recover, the funds raised by this page will be very very appreciated.
