Fundraising to support our friend, Ate Bel.
Auckland
Belinda Rubio (Ate Bel to her friends) left the Philippines over 10 years ago to pursue the NZ dream. Like other migrants, it took years of sacrifice and hardwork to make that dream a reality - a nursing career she loves and being able to call NZ a permanent home.
However, just as she was beginning to enjoy the fruits of her hardwork, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Squamos Cell Carcinoma (Skin Cancer) in July 2025. She underwent months of chemotherapy until April 2026 when her body stopped responding to the treatment. Surgery has also been ruled out as the cancer has now spread all over her body.
She suffers from chronic pain that has severely limited her mobility and affected her independence. She is being cared for by family at home and was recently referred to hospice due to the chronic pain. As her condition continues to deteriorate, her family's ability to care for her while providing for their financial needs has become extremely challenging. While hospital visits and treatments are free, the increasing cost of living is not.
We are now appealing to your generosity to help ease the financial burden from Ate Bel's family so that they can focus on supporting and caring for her. She is one of the kindest and most generous person we know and despite what she is going through, she has maintained a hopeful outlook and an unwavering faith in God.
On behalf of Ate Bel and her family, we thank you for your generosity. May it return to you a thousandfold.

Ate Bel and I have become friends after sharing a flat together about five years ago.
All funds raised will go towards Ate Bel's daily living expenses.
Thank you for your support and generosity. 19 October 2026
UPDATE: It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing that Ate Bel has passed away today, 19 October, at Waipuna Hospice in Tauranga. We are immensely grateful to everyone who has supported this fundraising.
We are currently coordinating with Give a Little to facilitate the early release of the fund to go towards funeral expenses. Once that has been sorted, we will close this fundraising.
Again, thank you and may your generosity be greatly rewarded.
