Mental health trauma support for victims of Cyclone Gabrielle in Hawkes Bay.
Rotorua, Bay Of Plenty
14 February 2023, Hawkes Bay was hit hard by Cyclone Gabrielle during the wee hours of the night. The devastation and destruction some communities have faced is indescribable.
On Monday, 27 February, a team of like minded professionals from Rotorua created history by being the first volunteer trauma response team to touch down in HB.. This trip was generously funded by a local businessman,, three amazing non-funded entities who have put countless hours into delivering supplies to HB and the rest by Top Staff Solutions. Unfortunately, we are not in a position to be able to keep funding trips on our own as we are a small business, so we need your help!
The team consisted of four mental health professionals and a general practitioner doctor. While in Hawkes Bay the team supported people in all communities including Twyford, Puketapu, Rissington, Waipawa, Waipukerau, Bayview and Eskdale.
The trauma people have experienced and the support they will continue to need is not a short term thing and the public health system is already stretched.
We would like to organise one trip departing Rotorua per month for the remainder of 2023. Each trip costs approximately $4000 to cover flights, accommodation, rental cars and living expenses.
If you are in a position to help, please do. Farmers already disproportionally hold a heavy part of the national suicide statistics each year, and we want to ensure that these statistics don't skyrocket.
Flights, accommodation, rental vehicles, petrol and food for the volunteer team.
