Help Tex on his road to recovery

  • 21-12

      21 December 2016

Tex is doing really well, still not back to running around the paddocks chasing bunnies but he will get there in time.

3rd December he had his drain taken out (I talked about it in last update) however the fluid built up again so we are wheat bagging it twice a day to get the blood flowing more and hopefully the body can get rid of it itself as another surgery means more risk especially with it being right on the joint. We appear to be having some success with the wheat bag so hopefully this continues.

We has got his weight back up now so we will slowly reduce back down his food content to see if he can contain it.

All seems to be going really good with him though just wish the ear infection would go away as he continues to battle this in one ear.

Overall though we are super grateful to still have him with us and watch him slowly get back to how he was, the tex we know.

Thank you to everyone that continues to ask us how he is all the aroha (love) that you have shown us

Tex has been at home for 12 days now. Yesterday he had a visit to the local vets to check if he could come off his ear drops, fingers were crossed the infection was all gone. We had a good outcome for one ear but his 'good' ear still requires treatment. But unfortunately the visit wasn't just for his ears he had developed what I was calling a knoby elbow, the vet drained mls of fluid from it hoping it wouldn't flare up but within 8 hours it had filled back up meaning he would need another surgery ??. So today he went back to the vets to under go more surgery, the needed to put a drain in which means he will go to the vets daily for the next three days to check it all out as we really don't want an infection getting in as its right on the joint. All going well the drain will come out on Friday so fingers crossed for this.

Wednesday was surgery day for Tex, the last thing that was standing in the way of him coming home. Surgery on his ear was a success, he recovered well and is getting use to not having one ear.

Thursday night Tex was discharged and came home yaye. He still requires daily cleaning of one wound in particular.

We are super happy to have him back home with us.

Tex has had a really good week. Starting with Sunday walking out of his cage 3 times and eating more food than just chicken but still required a top up through the nasal feeding tube. They put a drain in one of his wounds to help drain some puss out and he had a fever Sunday morning but that was OK as it helps fight infections and by night time his temperature was back to normal.

Monday he was taken off the iv painkillers, was wagging his tail at the vet and eating heaps of food. Plus walked out to see dad when he visited. He was also shifted out of icu and into normal hospital part as his heart and kidneys are back to normal.

Tuesday he was fully taken off iv fluids and pretty much doubled his food intake and even got to go for a ride in the ute and a small walk with dad.

Yesterday he came running (slow run but faster than walking) to me wagging his tail. I was so excited to see him and I think he was excited to see me too. The vet informed us he was loving his head washes (washing all the wounds out) but she was having to give him extra pain relief for this. We went for another little ride in the ute which is probably his favourite thing to do along with chasing bunnies.

Today the vet rung and said she wasn't giving him extra painkillers to do his head washes and that we could have him home for the weekend if we wanted but would need to do his head washes and that his wounds are still oozing a lot so would need to be prepared for it to get everywhere. As much as I would love to have him home I don't feel confident to be washing all his open wounds (he still has a lot) as I wouldn't want to hurt him but hopefully the weather is fine and I can take him out for a couple of hours. Plus I wouldn't want to not do something right and have it interfere with the plan for him to have surgery next week. We seem so close yet so far from having our boy back home permanently with us. He is such a trooper, huge THANK YOU to all those that have donated and for everyone's support it has been awesome and overwhelming we can't thank you enough!!
