Promote and advance heart health and health equity for Peoples of Fiji
Wellington
Ganna Research Network is committed to advancing the health and wellbeing of Aotearoa-based Peoples of Fiji through:
- evidence-based research, education and advocacy for equity in healthcare, health access and health delivery;
- developing cultural frameworks and guiding principles that are relevant to people's of Fiji and research conducted using their health data and genetic information
Ganna Research Network is the brainchild of Pritika Narayan, a molecular biologist. She is driven and passionate about ensuring equitable health outcomes and resourcing for People's of Fiji living in Aotearoa in our health care system.
Pritika has previously worked in field of genetics and epi-genetics in brain disease, but over the last few years has realised these studies have not been representative or inclusive of ethnic communities, hence the refocusing of her technical expertise to equity in these spaces for ethnic communities. Naturally, given she's from Fiji, she has gravitated to starting there.
Ganna wants to run community events that allow for in depth consultation with Peoples of Fiji, about how the research will be done, assessing what benefits/risks there are to the community, how those risks will be mitigated, establishing a research steering committee with representatives from the People's of Fiji, who bring relevant skills and attributes to look after, protect and make decisions about how the data is used, shared and published.
