‼️Protect Onoke Pā WINS‼️
Today the Environment Court has issued its decision on the appeal against a grant of consent to build 93 homes on our tribal wāhi tapu Onoke Pā.
The Environment Court proceedings were against Onoke Heights LTD Whangarei District Council and Northland Regional Council
In their decision Judges Smith and Williams said:
“This is one of the clearest cases we have seen where consent should be refused”.
The Court shared further:
“We can simply say that having revisited the matter nearly 30yrs later, we considered it be to one of the clearest cases we have seen of an inappropriate site being listed for development where it contains sites of significance to Māori and historic heritage”.
The Court has also confirmed the heritage trees on the pā are not to be tampered with.
Ngā Mahinga o Ngāti Kahu o Torongare is now reviewing the 54 page decision in detail but wish to acknowledge the many hands who have helped and supported.
This 30YR battle to protect Onoke Pā has been kaumātua led with the next generation coming in to support.
We thank all those who have lent a hand, put up billboards, attended hui, donated and helped throughout the struggle.
Our applicants, legal counsel and witnesses fought hard, there has been much at stake for our hapū, whenua and taiao.
This is the best Christmas present ever!
Aroha nui to all - Protect Onoke Pā 🤍
