Support Puketawai Marae on the road to recovery after Cyclone Gabrielle

Tolaga Bay, Gisborne

"He aha te rangi ka ūhia te huruhuru te manu ka rere?"

What day shall bring us the feathers so that our bird may take flight?

On the 13th of February 2023 our marae, Puketawai Marae was significantly impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle. The whole marae complex including the wharenui, wharepaku and kōhanga reo buildings and contents sustained significant flood damage. This has been devastating for our hapu Te Whanau a Te Rangipureora, the wider Uawa and Tairawhiti communities. It has added another layer of stress and difficulty to the rebuild and we are starting to fear we may never get our marae back.

The marae does have a current insurance policy for the buildings. The whanau are working on submitting a claim. The marae does not have a current contents insurance policy.
