Purrs & Beans NZ: Cat Haven, Café and Adoptions

Formerly BaristaCats Café in the city, Purrs & Beans is New Zealand's longest running cat café, now located in the heart of the ‘village with a view’ Birkenhead, Auckland.

We are a small, independently run, social enterprise and sanctuary to a clowder of very special resident rescue cats, all of whom are older and some with special needs. Admission into the cat area is restricted to 10+ as part of our SPCA welfare plan which we enforce strictly to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of our cats.

Essentially we are a cross between a regular café and a cat shelter which means we have double the overheads than you regular hospitality establishment. Additionally as our resident cats are older, many with special needs, this means more regular veterinary visits as well as ongoing medication for some.

Everything spent at Purrs & Beans from booking in a visit to purchasing merchandise contributes towards our cats' care and helps us continue to run the premises which is their forever home.

We created this page to provide an opportunity for guests and supporters of our cause to donate more - if they wish and are in a position to do so. 2020 hit us hard with prolonged closure due to government lockdowns as a result of the pandemic. Since then, it has been a challenging several years with ongoing rising costs and tourism not bouncing back as things were, pre-Covid.

It is our goal to provide an enjoyable and enriching space for both humans and cats alike. Our aim is for our guests to not only have a purrific time but learn a little too. We believe we have created a tranquil space where our kitties can live their best lives and those in need of a bit of feline therapy can visit.
