Help our club and the wider community to restore this fine NZ designed and built classic wooden boat to its former glory
Wellington
We are a club in Kapiti College who have purchased a large classic wooden ketch. With your help the students of Kapiti College can have an unforgettable learning experience. All funds go towards fixing the boat and aiming to produce a full length documentary. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for all involved including the wider community. We aim to educate the students through real life problems and give them first hand knowledge of the history and stories of this fine boat .
I (Martin) along with another Technology teacher at Kapiti College are leading this project. We have assigned a year 12 student as our Captain and we have assembled a crew of willing students called the "Rakino Pirates". All work will be undertaken on school grounds by school students and their teachers in their own spare time. We both have sailing/boating experience and view this as an enormous learning opportunity for the students and greater community to get involved with.
We are a group set up within Kapiti College who have purchased a 29 ft Kauri ketch called the Rakino which was sunk last year. It is our aim to restore this fine boat to its former glory and return it to the water. Because we are only a school club it is our job to fund raise for the purchase of tools, equipment, safety gear, Kauri planking, glue, paint etc. All donors will have their names etched into some timber somewhere on the boat.
Phase two 14 March 2018
We are starting this page again to seek funds to help us enter the next phase of restoration. We require specialist timbers, tools, paints and epoxies.
Since we created this page over a year ago we were able to purchase basic tools and equipment to begin our restoration. We have since grown considerably in scale having just returned from Auckland to visit boat builders, the Maritime Museum and pull as much information, skills and knowledge from these people as possible.
Thank you for your generosity. Every bit counts.
Thank you kindly. Each donor is having their name etched on a nice plaque within the boat somewhere upon completion. :)
Wow cool! Thank you for your support. We hope we do the Woollacott name proud.
