Wellingtonians have been kept in the dark over the adverse impacts upon their communities of the bus changes.
Wellington
When the trolley buses were removed we were promised "a steady conversion of the region's buses to full electric".
The reality is less than 3% of the entire fleet are electric, with no hybrids and a large number of ageing, polluting buses staying.
For example the effects of these decisions on the west - east corridor from Karori to Seatoun for the next decade are:
- diesel bus movements every 5-10 minutes
- double the pollution of the trolley bus era
- negative health impacts on our children
- Significant 6dBD rise in noise
- reduction in house values along the route
There is no itemised commitment for the next 10 years in the Greater Wellington Regional Council draft long term plan (LTP) to accelerate the replacement of polluting diesels with electric buses.
The funds will be use to raise awareness and promote community engagement so Wellington can bring back sustainable clean transport.
