Eskdale, Hawke's Bay
In the early hours of Valentine’s Day, Cyclone Gabrielle slammed into the Hawkes Bay, NZ. Realising the paddocks were flooding Josh and Emmie attempted to get to the horses but got a call from Josh’s mother who was out of town that his sister Dani was trapped in their house. The water came up so fast that by the time Josh and Emmie got across the paddocks to Dani the flood water was chest deep. They managed to get Dani out of her bedroom window and rescue neighbours next door and then following fence lines were able to make their way to their grandparents property on higher ground. As the sun came up they went back out into their flooded paddocks to rescue their beloved horses, alpacas, and cats. All were rescued but one horse is now at Massey hospital. The extent of damage on their property is catastrophic. The neighbourhood, Eskdale, was hit extremely hard and there were no evacuation warnings. Many of their neighbours barely made it to their roof in time while several are still missing and some confirmed dead. They have a long road ahead of them but are grateful to be alive. Josh and Emmies tiny home that they just moved into was destroyed and they lost everything. As well as now being homeless, they also have several expenses like vet bills, clean up crews, and all the miscellaneous items that come with a devastating event like this. If you can spare anything, it would go a long way for them as they slowly put their lives back together.
Unfortunately Josh had just moved into his tiny home 2 days prior and insurance was pending so his home and all contents are not covered. His business is not covered by insurance either. Thank you
Josh is my nephew.
