I need a little help from friends to get to the start line of Racing The Planet Namib, in memory of Zach, an RTP legend.
Bay of Plenty
Hi
I’ve always been excited by impractical, impossible challenges. At 16, long before Strava, I cycled 630km from Johannesburg to Durban, finishing on the iconic Down Comrades Marathon route. Adventure later led me to hike the Drakensberg ranges and the iconic Otter Trail.
In New Zealand, I embraced triathlons, cycling, and open-water swimming, including the 160km Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge, the 4km Mauao Swim, and the Huka Extreme River Swim.
During the COVID lockdown, while studying for my teaching degree, Jeff Pelletier’s trail-running films lit the spark to run. A string of fractures delayed my plans, but also strengthened my resolve to keep moving toward. Jeff's Racing The Planet Namibia films fused my love of the Namib Desert, unforgettable family adventures there, a near-fatal misadventure, and a deep gratitude for a second chance at life.
When self-doubt crept in, Zach understood. At 69, he was still taking on desert races himself. He gently and steadily encouraged me, saying, “Karen, you’ve got this — in fact, your journey has already started. You've got to do this.” Sadly, my friend passed away before he could return to Namibia, the one desert race he hadn't yet finished, so now it's about honouring second chances, rebuilding after setbacks, and remembering that at 62, age and loss don't define me.
With a little help, I will give it everything I have — for my family, for Zach, for the desert, and for anyone who needs reminding that it is never too late to begin again.

Essentials required to participate in the race
Donation to a glioblastoma-related charity (NZ) to support people like my friend, who was blindsided by a devastating brain tumour.
The countdown begins 17 July 2026
It has been a year today since Zach's Glioblastoma had the final say. I have been reflecting on those year and everything I have achieved - thanks to a little push here, a nudge there and then the final plea almost. "You have got to do it". And I have been doing it. My training has consumed almost every waking moment - and some of me dreams.
It is now just a matter.of weeks - just shy of a month that I stand on that starting line in the Namib with new friendships waiting to be forged. I think he will be happy that I get to experience the whole Racing the Planet experience. That was what he wanted for me, or for anyone for that matter.
I am now entering a new type of training - passive heat training in the sauna - every day - pretty much until the race.
As of today, I will have done 10 sessions and they are hot! It is quite a weird experience sitting in a hotbox staring at the walls, trying to imagine being this hot in the desert for hours, never mind 30 minutes. To say the least, an interesting mental activity.
As of today, it is less than a month to the race. In fact, I fly out in two weeks. It is getting so real now. Thankfully, my dreadful blisters are healing - just not fast enough.
I was blwon away when I noticed my Activity tracking:
Time spent exercising: 237 hrs 14 mins
Total distance covered: 961.9 km - that's almost 1000km!
Thank you again to everyone for your amazing support - for making a dream come true. I truly appreciate it.
