Residents for Responsible Development - Cromwell (R4RDC)
This page has been created to help fund the Society’s (R4RDC) objective of encouraging the responsible development of Cromwell.Otago
Right now, developers are looking at the outskirts of Cromwell.
This small town in Central Otago consisting of about 6,000 people has been identified as a site for a 900 lot subdivision, to be known as ‘River Terrace’. If allowed, the Private Plan Change will see what is essentially rural land rezoned to add around 2,500 people to the population.
The application is well advanced and Hearings before independent commissioners are scheduled for 4-10 June this year.
This page has been created by the Residents for Responsible Development - Cromwell incorporated society (R4RDC) to raise funds to cover legal representation and independent expert reports that the Central Otago District Council has failed to commission. If not addressed this RMA process failure will see the developers’ proposal sail through the RMA process unchallenged.
The objective for R4RDC is to have development that is compatible with community aspirations, rather than having commercially focused developers call the tune.
If this Plan Change succeeds, a very disturbing precedent fostering unrestrained urban sprawl around Cromwell will be set.
Community opposition to this proposal is overwhelming. Of the 417 submissions received, 415 were against, only 2 in favour (one of which was the developer!)
Use of funds
We aim to Raise funding to be able to engage a lawyer, economist and urban designer to help put our case forward at a plan change hearing.
If the goal is not reached, the funds will be used to pay legal fees, urban design fees and planning fees.
Residents for Responsible Development-Cromwell incorporated society seeks funding for legal representation at the upcoming Plan Change 13 hearing. In order to balance the Applicant’s evidence, we believe it would be of great benefit to have the arguments of those individuals opposed to the development summarised and professionally presented to the independent Commissioners.
