Restoration of the historical Motueka wharf

  • Almost ready to start restoration work

    Motueka Community Board has just approved an allocation of $25,000 from its special project funds towards the wharf restoration. This with a $3,000 grant from NBS and around $7,000 from the Assaf family by donation and sales of Peter's autobiography, brings our fundraising total to $321,000. We estimate the total needed for the whole project to be around $400,000, but we are working in stages as funding is available. So far we have completed most of the planning and design work and we are ready to do stage 2, the removal of the trees from the wharf. We are almost ready to start stage 3, the reconstruction of the end of the wharf. As of today we are short of just $180 to cover the estimated cost of stage 3. So this is a good time to contribute to the project!

    We have just signed an Agreement with TDC to specify how we will work together over the implementation of the restoration work.

  • Lotteries grant

    The Lotteries Environment and Heritage Fund has just granted $150,000 towards the restoration of the old Motueka wharf. That means we have raised almost $300,000 now, which gives us confidence that the project is do-able. We are looking at how we can phase the work to start as soon as possible!

  • Wharf restoration gets closer

    We have now raised $127,000 for the restoration of the old Motueka wharf and have applied to Lotteries for a grant of $210,000. If successful we expect to proceed with the work in mid 2026. Thank you to all the generous donors.

  • Restoration update

    Our fundraising campaign is going well with almost $110,000 raised so far. The estimated cost is over $300,000, but we are currently investigating ways to reduce that cost, such as using artificial stone and/or shortening the wharf by 5 metres. We are continuing to investigate these options, with input from heritage specialists.

    We will be applying to the Lotteries Environment & Heritage Fund for a substantial grant (at least half of the project cost) and, if successful, we hope to proceed with the work next year.

  • Motueka Wharf Restoration

    We have now raised over $100,000 towards the old wharf restoration. We are most grateful for all the donations and grants received. We have also achieved a project milestone - obtaining an Archaeological Authority from Heritage New Zealand. Tasman District Council has requested a business case be prepared, covering options to reduce the cost (over $300,000), such as shortening the wharf by 5m, and work is under way on that.
