If you would like to provide help for Rita and Geoff, the most practical support right now is money, kia ora!
Northland
On Saturday night, shortly after 9 pm, a fire took hold of Rita and Geoff's home in Russell. Geoff was out watching the rugby, Rita was heading to bed. In less than 5 minutes the fire had taken hold and within 10 minutes their home was fully ablaze. Ordered out of the house by Firecom, she left with nothing but her phone. Fortunately their cat escaped and has since returned. Although they have contents insurance, much of what she lost was irreplaceable and it won't cover everything. For example she is a keen photographer, he is a keen musician and the good quality photographic equipment and his guitars won't be covered.
Rita worked from home and has lost her computer, her database, all her files and much of the things she needs to keep going, so it will take time to get back on her feet. The most useful thing people can do to help right now is donate funds to deal with some of the practical challenges they are going through, and ease the stress.
Our next door neighbour's house went up in flames and burned down in about 10 minutes. Rita only has the clothes on her back and her cellphone left. Everything else has gone.
The funds will go on personal effects, replacing her work equipment, maybe a new guitar and camera and getting them back on their feet. They may also need relocation costs.
Our heartfelt thanks 13 April 2019
Kia Ora Everybody,
Rita and Geoff here. Givealittle does not allow us to send you all an update directly but this way works too:-)
We would like to thank you all very much for your help in these hard times! We have been humbled by the support given to us after the fire and despite it being a very traumatic experience we have also received much warmth and support these past 4 weeks. Some of you we know personally very well and but others we don't but to all of you we say again THANK YOU!
If you would like to follow our journey from here on you can do so on my facebook page "The Intrepid Weaver" - which will eventually also link back to my blog (it used to be a travel blog but might use it for more regular updates now).
We have moved into a new place a week ago and slowly settling into a new routine but just yesterday was one of those days when the gravity of it all hit home again when we realized how many treasured photos alone we've lost - of which we had the only copies in our family... its hard at times and will be like this for weeks and months or even years but with your help we can at least start the road to recovery.
Kia Ora! Danke! Thank you again!
Rita & Geoff
