Ruby 15 has severe scoliosis and is in hospital now between two major spinal surgeries. When shes out she would like to still ride a bike.
Clarks Beach, Auckland
Ruby was 13 when we found out she had a 50 degree curve in her spine. Its painful and its very bent. Over 2 years of waiting her curve is now 98 degrees. Her ribs hit her pelvis. It wasnt good news she would need several surgeries to stop it ever getting worse. Some discs in her spine need to be removed in a long operation through her side and collapse a lung to reach the discs. In the same operation a surgeon will attach a halo crown to her scull with 6 screws. Then while recovering from that she will be in traction lying in bed or a wheelchair with up to 24kg half her body weight of weights attached to her spine all day and night thru the crown to slowly stretch her crooked spine. Once its much straighter the surgeon will perform a full fusion operation and attach rods down either side of her spine to hold it in place straight forever. A real challenge to go through
I'm Rubys mother Andrea. We are both here in starship. I'm helping her whilst shes in traction.
A suitable ebike "cruiser style" so she can sit upright and straight and not curl over as with other bikes.
