Running for the children of West Kalimantan

  • Half-marathon completed! - 24/06/2013

      24 June 2013

The rain stopped and the wind eased on the the morning os Sunday 23rd in time for the Wellington Half Marathon. And I made it -I finished in 2h02mins - so really pleased with my time, even though I found it hard, and my body now hurts all over. Thank you to all the generous supporters - we have now raised $1328 for the children of West Kalimantan. That's amazing. Thank you too to my family who have looked after my children while I trained; and to friends, neighbours and Ngaio mums who I have run with, swapped running stories with and who have supported me in my aim to complete this event. Thank you everyone:-)

  • Training over - 21/06/2013

      21 June 2013

Well I had my last training run today, just a short 15 mins round the block. So just 1 more day between now and race day on Sunday. I'm feeling nervous and hoping the weather has improved significantly on the current gale force southerlies. I'm setting a line in the sand - my target run time is 2h15mins. Wish me luck!

  • Target reached! - 18/06/2013

      18 June 2013

Yay - with $1036 raised we have just passed my target - thank you everyone for your support. This a big contribution towards worm treatment for the children of West Kalimantan. And if we continue past the target, then thats more children we can help. Thanks.

  • A weekend away - 13/06/2013

      13 June 2013

At $915, we're getting close to my target - fantastic. This week all my runs are 5-8km long, so quite manageable, and my run on Sunday will be in Rotorua! Yes, Paul and I have a weekend away without kids - they'll be staying with a variety of aunts, uncles (and nan) around Wellington. Can't wait.

  • Early morning's run - 10/06/2013

      10 June 2013

Wow - $685 raised so far - thank you everyone for your donations and messages of support. This morning I was up before 6am with Zara, then handed her over to Paul, before heading out to the park at 6.15am to do sprints around it with a group of Ngaio mums who run. It's an early start, but its great to have company, and motivates me to go faster than my usual plod. Two weeks to go now.

  • Update for 06/06/2013

      6 June 2013

Thank you for all the generous donations today. Tomorrow will be my longest training run in preparation for the half marathon - 18km. For those that know Wellington, I will run from Thorndon Quay around all the bays to the airport, and back again. As its Wellington it will either be a stiff biting southerly, or a gale northerly (always a headwind 1 way). It will take me a grueling 2 hours, and from about the 1 hour mark my whole body hurts (I'm not made for running). Afterwards I'll stretch, ice my knees and drink loads of sports drink to rehydrate. And start counting down to the big event.

  • Update for 04/06/2013

It doesn't sound like a big thing to do, but deworming is a 'best buy' in development. There's good evidence that shows treating children for worms?which affect an estimated 600 million school-aged children worldwide?improves school attendance, health, and long-run productivity. While mild infections often go unnoticed, more severe worm infections can lead to abdominal pain, anemia and malnutrition. Oral deworming drugs are extremely effective at killing most varieties of worms with a single dose, at a cost of just few cents per treatment. So its a simple way to help a lot of of children in West Kalimantan.
