Running 250km in the Atacama Desert to raise money for the Milford Foundation
Auckland
I’m raising money for the Milford Foundation to support the Scholarship programme, which will provide financial support to school leavers who could not otherwise afford to attend university. In return I’ll be running 250km in the Atacama Desert, Chile, in the Atacama Crossing ultramarathon (https://www.racingtheplanet.com/atacamacrossing). 6 stages over 7 days, averaging a marathon a day with the longest stage 76km and the shortest 10km. Starting altitude is 10,500 feet. I’ll be carrying everything needed for the week (food etc) in a backpack except a tent.
The Atacama Crossing is a 7-day, 250 km / 155 mile footrace that takes place in the incredible Atacama Desert of Chile. Through the seven days, competitors traverse through salt flats, massive sand dunes, icy cold slot canyons, river crossings, and experience starry nights while in the foothills of the Andes mountains as they complete the 250-kilometer / 155-mile course. The race goes through the Salar de Atacama, Moon Valley and Valle de la Muerte, and finally ends in the Town Square of the adobe-like village of San Pedro de Atacama.
I'm the recently retired chair of Milford Asset Management and a proud supporter of the Milford Foundation
The Milford Foundation Scholarship programme’s purpose is to reduce inequality in access to tertiary education. Scholarship recipients will also benefit from the Milford Foundation network to support them in their educational journey and career path.
