    April 6

The goal date for Sam to get home moves closer and he can't wait to be back in Papamoa. Support within community remains amazing. In recent times a couple of schools have held mufti days for Sam.

The strength is slowly building in Sam's shoulders through determination and commitment at physio sessions at the gym.Back at home we are getting drawings done to modify the house for his return.

We wish you all a happy Easter and if any of you are in Auckland please popin in and say gidday as Sam would love to see you.

Sam has now completed his second week in the spinal unit. He is progressing well with moving around with great skill in his powerchair. Also improving is his tolerance to being upright in the chair and he has increased his angle on the tilt table to 55 degrees. We had a Goal setting meeting last Thursday where all people assisting with Sams care provided us all with updates on current happening and also agreeing on steps in his rehab going forward. Sam has also made progress in working towards feeding himself which is really cool. We have also been provided with a scheduled discharge date of 28 April which is not that far away.

    March 20

Sam has settled into the spinal unit with the physiotherapy and occupational therapy sessions getting underway. On Wednesday Sam was able to sit up enough to get into the power chair and drive around with the aid of wrist lacers to strengthen the wrists - it is good to have some mobility. Attached to the chair is a funky water bottle with a long bendy straw which helps to keep the water intake to the necessary level for good health.

  • Feb 18 (Day52)

      14 March 2015

Sam remains in high dependency unit and on Sunday lunchtime he had his trachea tube removed. This is a major step forward in his recovery.

The first night post tube removal was pretty tough with secretions forming faster than Sams and the hospital staffs ability to remove them.

Unfortunately this resulted in a collapsed lung .

Since Sunday night the sleeps have got better and the lungs have improved.

Sam continues to work hard during the day to clear secretions and we see gradual improvement.

During the night he gets a boost of oxygen and positive pressure on his lungs to aid in sleep and to reduce the risk of further lung complications.

Thankyou for all your support to the givealittle page and your messages provides additional strength to Sam

'Day 59 Sam has had a very eventful week. His week started in the high dependency unit and on Monday we packed up our gear and moved to ward 11 . The move to the ward is a significant step in sams recovery and we are all pleased to be here. We say goodbye to all the great doctors and nurses who have helped Sam through the very critical stages post his accident. Sams lung secretions have reduced significantly and in recent days Sam has started to eat small quantities of real food . Today Sam was placed on a tilt table so he could get the overdue chance to look down on us. This piece of equipment will be used as part his ongoing rehab program. Once again we thank all of you for the fantastic support towards Sams recovery.'

  • March 11- Finally at the Spinal Unit

      14 March 2015

Sam has finally arrived at the Auckland spinal rehabilitation unit.

Yesterday we packed up sams gear, thanked the staff from ward 11 at Middlemore Hospital and transferred to the Bairds Rd spinal facility.

He met the doctors, physiotherapists and occupational therapists who will be taking good care of him over the coming weeks.

Sam has also been told that tomorrow he can have a turn in a powerchair.

A detailed plan for Sams rehab will be worked through in coming days and Sam is keen to work hard at the goals that will be set.

The visiting hours are on the website, so anybody wanting to visit please come on up!!!
