Let's have a sane system for Akaroa's wastewater. No overflows, highest treatment standard and maximum re-use to alleviate water shortages.
Akaroa, Canterbury
Friends of Banks Peninsula is a community organisation working to protect the local environment since 1990.
Our current focus in on the Council's proposed new Akaroa Wastewater system. We want to see a system that can:
• withstand the impacts of climate change including more frequent and intense storms;
• avoid raw and treated wastewater overflows and nutrient and biological pollution;
• fixes the sewer pipe network so that infiltration and leakage is minimised;
• treats the wastewater to the highest possible standard to facilitate re-use in a town that suffers chronic summer water shortages;
• is affordable for the Council to build, operate and maintain properly.
The land based irrigation system currently proposed by the Council won't achieve any of these goals. Instead $100 million is to be invested on a system that its own consultants have already identified will overflow both raw and treated wastewater every wet winter because the sewer pipes in Akaroa leak so badly that most of the wastewater is storm water infiltration. Failing to fix the pipes means the system has to be much bigger and more expensive than if it was just dealing with human sewage, and means there is no headroom for expansion. It leaves Akaroa increasingly vulnerable to extreme storms and sea level rise and the problem of broken pipes is left for the future. There is no Plan B should this experimental system experience unforeseen issues, such as slips or fire taking out irrigation areas.
Funding expert engineering and legal advice to support Friends of Banks Peninsula at the Akaroa Treated Wastewater Irrigation Consent hearings. All funds raised will go toward this. The more we raise the stronger a case we can present.

Latest news on Akaroa Wastewater - Christchurch City Council intends to discharge wastewater overflows onto Childrens Bay Beach through the seawall behind the boat store (in the car park behind the Recreation Ground beside the boat launch area. We need to stop this insanity. Read the report here: https://www.friendsofbp.org.nz/
Many thanks to everyone who has donated to the Sanity not Sewage Overflows so far. The first week of the hearings for the proposed Akaroa Wastewater system were held in November. We were impressed by the detailed and probing questions asked of the Council by the Hearing Panel.
Our expert evidence and legal submissions so far have made a big difference to the process raising up the issues that the Panel needs to delve into.
Hearings reconvene in Akaroa on January 28/29th with Friends of Banks Peninsula and our experts presenting on February 11th.
Please come along to support us, and please talk to your friends and relatives over the holidays about the wastewater issue. We are still fundraising to maximise the expert and legal support for our case for February 11th. More donations are very appreciated!
Merry Christmas to you and and many thanks again.
