Opoutere Youth Hostel is a unique rural NZ hostel. We are fighting to keep the hostel open as was agreed at the YHA AGM.
Waikato
Opoutere Youth Hostel is a unique rural hostel on the Coromandel coast which is a treasured retreat for Kiwis and tourists. The YHA board is planning to close the hostel despite opposition from YHA members, and despite a decision made at the last AGM to keep it open. Opoutere Hostel Protection Society is a passionate group of both YHA members and public supporters, determined to challenge the YHA's Board's decision to close the Opoutere Hostel.
In November 2017, the YHA AGM passed two resolutions:
1. That the YHA National Board shall recognise the Opoutere Hostel Group and consult with them fully in any decision(s) regarding the future of the Opoutere YHA Hostel. (No dissent or abstention.)
2. That the YHA National Board shall defer the decision regarding the future of Opoutere Hostel for 12 months to enable fully informed consultation amongst all interested parties. (Majority 63% of votes.)
Despite these decisions at the AGM, the YHA National Board closed the doors to visitors at Opoutere in March 2018.
Support our movement to open the doors and keep Opoutere Hostel open.
